For some reason, we were not supposed to talk about Anime, as per Interac. No idea why. When I found out I was being fired, I broke all the rules in my last month. What more could they do to me?

A kid was softly singing the My Neighbor Totoro theme song to himself. That's one of my favorite movies. I started singing along. At first, he just stopped and gave me a blank look. Then he picks back up and we sang together. In Japanese. Get. Stuffed.

In one of my classes, the kids were taking a quiz quietly. Part of the vocabulary lesson sentence began with “We are” and as the teacher is writing it, he says “On the cruuuuuise....” under his breath and I interjected “One Piece!” His eyes got wide as saucers. “You know One Piece?” he asked. And I replied “Yeah! I like Anime.”

Oh it was glorious. Me and the teacher just geeking out over Anime.

Teacher: Do you know Ruroni Kenshin?

Me: I love Ruroni Kenshin!

Teacher: What about Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon?

Me: Yes! I love Sailor Moon, it's my favorite Anime!

Teacher: What is Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon in English?

Me: Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon. But we just say Sailor Moon.

Teacher: I watched it all the time in 5th grade.

Me: Me too! I watched Sailor Moon 5th grade also!

Teacher: What about Dragonball?

Me: Yes! Who's your favorite character?

Teacher: Piccolo! How about you?

Me: I like Vegeta!

The students finished the quiz and he announced to the class “Japanese Anime is very famous! Sensei knows about Anime in America!” And there was just a collective gasp from the students. Absolutely mind-blown. He was already one of my favorite teachers but that solidified it. We kept in touch for a while. He also loved Donald Duck and he did a fantastic impression.
